Studies undertaken by MGLSD and other stakeholders indicate that 42.8% of older persons collect water from boreholes while 59.2% use water from other sources. The Uganda Reach the Aged Association Report (2005) indicates that older persons who cannot travel long distances use contaminated water, which puts their health at risk. Limited access to safe water, long distances to water sources and poor environmental sanitation are some of the root causes of ill health among older persons. Apart from pit latrine coverage being low in most communities, they are not old age user-friendly as older persons usually have difficulty in using them.
